Ride the Wave of Clean Water

The beaches and the sea are part of life in Rio de Janeiro, they are the heritage of the city and the country. Besides the exuberant scenic beauty they offer numerous opportunities for a variety of uses and are a source for the well-being of the population. However, these opportunities are being seriously compromised and wasted due to continuous neglect of sanitation and the pollution of the rivers and beaches.

With the Olympics coming soon, the serious problem of pollution in Guanabara Bay undermines the image of Rio de Janeiro and the country on the international stage. Many of the residences in the municipalities surrounding the bay still cannot rely on garbage collection and sewage treatment, and the goal to reach universal sanitation in this region is a huge challenge to be overcome.

Meanwhile, sewage dumps continue to affect health and cause economic, social and environmental damage, that interfere with the running of the sporting events, people get sick and can even lead them to death.

With this outcry of protest which unites several institutions, movements and citizens we want the promises and plans for recovery of water quality of rivers and beaches of Rio to be met.

All who sign the manifesto unite to demand the government’s commitment in the transparent and efficient implementation of the necessary measures to ensure that the year 2016 will be better, and we can be proud of hosting international sporting events on our beaches with good waves and even better water quality.

Join now and ride this wave: https://secure.avaaz.org/po/petition/Governo_do_Estado_do_Rio_de_Janeiro_Saneamento_ja_para_que_as_praias_cariocas_picos_de_excelencia_do_surfe/?nvHTsjb%E2%80%8B

After Rio de Janeiro the idea is to expand the campaign to other beaches in Brazil.
