In 4 years, 301 new species are found in the Amazon

Plecturocebus grovesi - Espécies descobertas na Amazônia - species in Amazon

Frequently a new rabbit comes out of the Amazon’s hat. Or monkey. The one on the photo was named Plecturocebus grovesi and is just one example of the 301 new species discovered in the region in the last 4 years. Almost a new version of Noah’s Ark: spiders (141), reptiles (14), mammals (3), plants (58) and amphibians (18) that we had never heard of. Unfortunately, it is possible that many unknown animals and plants will never be seen, because the destruction of the forest can lead to extinction before they are discovered. It is necessary to protect this treasure of hidden biodiversity.

On the other hand…

I don’t know if you are aware, but a sixth mass extinction is coming. And it is not just the animal kingdom is threatened, the vegetable follows the same direction. This will directly influence our menu and may increase hunger and malnutrition in the world. According to a Biodiversity International study, 22 percent of potato species are expected to become extinct by 2055 due to climate change, for example.

Cocoa and coffee are also on the list. How to prevent this? Investing in agricultural biodiversity. The more species, the better for our palate and the environment. Monoculture is not an option.
